Spike Lee

Spike Lee was the eighties awnser to the seventies blaxploitation films. Before his contribution, black characters and situations in film had always been drawn in a stereotypical way. Writing all his films with a sharp sense of street poetry, his vision led him to depict the life of America's black community, from family life to racial tensions, often leading to incendiary criticisms of society. His examination of black people's experience revealed a new (and more authentic) angle to their portrayal and inspired a mass of "street reality" films in his trail.
