Born in Sweden to a religious family, Bergman is one of the most philosophical filmmakers I have come across. He trained in opera and theatre, and then later turned to scriptwriting, where he liked to novelize ideas before turning them into screenplays. His films, all written by himself, revealed the ability of cinema to dissect the problems, emotions and ironies of life in a visually arresting and intellectually challenging way.
